Arthur Miller\u2019s \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d (Sat\u0131c\u0131n\u0131n \u00d6l\u00fcm\u00fc) premiered at Etimesgut City Theatre (Etimesgut Kent Tiyatrosu) in a new production directed by Jason Hale, chair of Bilkent University\u2019s Department of Performing Arts. Staged by the Etimesgut Municipality City Theatre, the production brings a foundational modern drama to audiences through a collaboration that also highlights Bilkent\u2019s contribution to professional theatre practice in Ankara. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

First premiered in 1949, \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d remains a defining work of twentieth-century theatre for its intimate, unsentimental portrayal of a family under pressure and its critique of the social expectations surrounding \u201csuccess.\u201d Through Willy Loman, the  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

play exposes the loneliness beneath the rhetoric of respectability and the \u201cAmerican Dream,\u201d while tracing how economic insecurity, status anxiety and the erosion of dignity can shape a person\u2019s inner life. The text\u2019s movement between present experience and memory gives the story its distinctive structure, sharpening its focus on self-deception, regret and the fragile narratives people build to endure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The production team included Ege Tolga (THEA \u201923), a part-time instructor at Bilkent University\u2019s Department of Performing Arts, who served as assistant director. The Turkish translation was prepared by Bark\u0131n Kenan (THEA \u201917), a member of BILT (Bilkent International Laboratory Theatre). Among the actors were Melih Efe\u00e7\u0131nar (THEA \u201914) and \u0130brahim Cem Civan (THEA \u201925). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etimesgut Mayor and Artistic Director of Etimesgut Kent Tiyatrosu Erdal Be\u015fik\u00e7io\u011flu publicly recognized Hale\u2019s direction after the premiere, noting that the staging translated the spirit of Miller\u2019s text into a striking and resonant stage language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
