Bilkent University hosted Prof. Thors Hans Hansson of Stockholm University and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as a speaker for the 2023 \u0130hsan Do\u011framac\u0131 Memorial Lecture. This year\u2019s memorial lecture titled \u201cFive Wonders of the Quantum World,\u201d was held on Wednesday, November 15, at the \u0130hsan and Ayser Do\u011framac\u0131 Science, Culture and Art Center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. Hansson is a distinguished scientist who made seminal contributions to Quantum Chromo Dynamics, the theory of strong force, and Chern-Simons theory. He served as a member of the Nobel Committee for Physics and was the director of Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lecture began with the opening remarks by Rector Prof. K\u00fcr\u015fat Aydo\u011fan, Prof. Tayfun \u00d6z\u00e7elik, dean of the Faculty of Science and Prof. Bilal Tanatar of the Department of Physics.The program continued with a movie screening of \u0130hsan Do\u011framac\u0131 followed by a mini concert by Nil \u0130pek \u015eabi, Belit \u00c7ift\u00e7i and Elif Naz Karabulut. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his talk Prof. Hansson explored some of the many intriguing aspects of quantum theory. It was a mixture of old results and very new ones. Some having direct consequences for the matter around us, and some more exotic, but with potential consequences for future technology. Prof. Hansson\u2019s aim was to show that all these aspects form a beautiful braid of theoretical ideas and observable phenomena. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
