They were accompanied by Rector Prof. K\u00fcr\u015fat Aydo\u011fan, Provost Prof. Orhan Ayt\u00fcr and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Letters, Prof. Simon Wigley.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/bilkentnews.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_5757-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8852\" width=\"643\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bilkentnews.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_5757-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bilkentnews.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_5757-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bilkentnews.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_5757-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bilkentnews.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_5757-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/bilkentnews.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_5757-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The group had the rare opportunity to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site under the expert guidance of Prof. R.R.R. Smith, the director of excavations at Aphrodisias. Prof. Smith led an in-depth tour of the remarkably well-preserved ruins, highlighting the city\u2019s historical significance as a major center for sculpture and learning in the Roman period. Participants were able to admire some of the spectacular marble sculptures and sarcophagi produced by the city\u2019s famed workshops.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the visit, Prof. Smith provided fascinating insights into the artistic, cultural and political life of ancient Aphrodisias, offering students and faculty a deeper appreciation of the ongoing archaeological research and conservation efforts at the site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trip provided a valuable opportunity for experiential learning, allowing participants to engage directly with one of the most important archaeological sites in T\u00fcrkiye and to deepen their understanding of the ancient world beyond the classroom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the weekend of April 26\u201327, undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty members from the Department of Archaeology embarked on an enriching excursion to the ancient city of Aphrodisias, located in Geyre, Ayd\u0131n Province.
