November 10, 2025, marked the 87th anniversary of the passing of T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s beloved Atat\u00fcrk. Bilkent University commemorated the solemn occasion over the course of two days with several events.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 8, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Tolga Atalay \u00dcn and featuring Miguel da Silva on viola and Nusret \u0130spir on clarinet, presented a concert in memory of Atat\u00fcrk. The performance, held at the Bilkent Concert Hall, featured works by \u0130. D. O\u011fuz, M. Bruch and P. I. Tchaikovsky.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the morning of Monday, November 10, members of the Bilkent community gathered at Bilkent\u2019s Atat\u00fcrk Monument to observe a moment of silence.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A ceremony took place at Mithat \u00c7oruh Auditorium afterwards. It began with a moment of silence and the national anthem, followed by a mini concert performed by the Bilkent Youth Quartet. Next, students Onur Aks\u00fct (LAW), Emre Altuner (CS), Bekir Bartu Cebeci (EE), Umut Erdem (POLS) and Ya\u011fmur Yavuzarslan (POLS) presented their HIST200 project, \u201cBursa Atat\u00fcrk Evi.\u201d       <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following this, Prof. Ba\u015fak Baysal, Dean of the Faculty of Law, gave a presentation titled \u201cAtat\u00fcrk, Civil Code and The Revolution of Women.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her talk, Prof. Baysal examined the 1926 Turkish Civil Code as a cornerstone of women\u2019s rights, noting Atat\u00fcrk\u2019s decisive commitment to the legal revolution. She emphasized that law was given a transformative role in the Kemalist revolution and that Atat\u00fcrk tasked law schools with fostering new legal knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She underlined that the Civil Code ensured equal citizenship for women and men and linked the entry of\u00a0T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s\u00a0first female lawyer,\u00a0S\u00fcreyya\u00a0A\u011fao\u011flu, and first female law professor, Prof. Dr.\u00a0T\u00fcrkan\u00a0Rado, directly to this reform. Dr.\u00a0Baysal\u00a0stated that she did not consider it\u00a0appropriate to\u00a0advance the argument of state feminism in a manner that diminishes the transformative power of the legal revolution. She concluded her remarks by asserting that the Civil Law revolution, in its essence, constituted a revolution for women.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
