The Bilkent University Library celebrated its 40th anniversary with a panel titled “40 Years of Bilkent University Library,” held at the Library Art Gallery with the participation of Rector Prof. Kürşat Aydoğan.
The panel brought together three directors who have played key roles in shaping the development of the Bilkent University Library across different periods. Founding Director (1986–2005) Dr. Phyllis L. Erdoğan, former Library Director (2007–2016) Assoc. Prof. David E. Thornton, and (since 2016) current Library Director Dr. Ebru Kaya shared their experiences and reflections on the library’s evolution over the past four decades.
The event began with a video presentation in which Bilkent faculty members shared their experiences with the library, reflecting on its role in their academic journeys and the connections they have built with the library over the years.
During the panel, the speakers discussed the growth of the library’s collections, its expanding role in supporting academic research and the institutional developments that have shaped its services. They also highlighted the transformation of library practices through digitization and the integration of new technologies, emphasizing how these changes have strengthened the university’s access to information and research resources.
By reflecting on their respective tenures, the speakers offered a historical perspective on the milestones and achievements that have defined the library since its establishment. The event also provided an opportunity to recognize the contributions of past and present staff members who have supported the library’s mission.
The panel concluded with a discussion of the library’s future, focusing on continued innovation in digital services, evolving research needs and the ongoing commitment of the library to support teaching, learning and scholarship at Bilkent University.
