The earthquake in Kahramanmaraş and the surrounding area on Monday, February 6, has deeply affected everyone. Thousands of people were killed and over fifty thousand more injured in the earthquake. In response to this devastating event, the Bilkent University Social Awareness Projects (TDP), together with Radio Bilkent, organized an aid drive to support emergency operations in the region and to reach out to those afflicted by the disaster.
Volunteer Bilkent students started sorting and preparing all incoming donations on Monday morning and continued to work tirelessly and sleeplessly through the week.
TDP President Mert Kılıç (MAN/IV) and Radio Bilkent General Coordinator Soner Kalın (TRIN/II) said: “When we received this painful news, we immediately contacted each other and started a joint organization. As the Student Activities Center, TDP and Radio Bilkent, we collected aid in a continuous and coordinated way and loaded it into aid trucks that were available through TDP’s connections. Later, volunteer students from Bilkent joined the effort. We are deeply grateful to them. We sent the donations to the earthquake zones in vehicles from Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, ATO, Tepe Holding and Bilintur. We hope that we were able to help people who survived in the earthquake zones.”
