Efe Alpay Debuts Mnemonic Data Sculptures at Art Basel and RenderCon

Asst. Prof. Efe Alpay of the Department of Graphic Design recently presented his Mnemonic Data Sculptures at Art Basel Miami 2024 and RenderCon Hollywood 2025, continuing his exploration of transforming sound data into physical-digital forms. At Art Basel Miami, held December 6–8, 2024, Alpay showcased “A Giant Leap,” a sculptural piece based on Neil Armstrong’s first words on the moon.

The work used FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) and generative design techniques to merge auditory history with visual form. His exhibition at Art Basel further solidified his growing prominence in the art world, following his Lumen Prize shortlist. At RenderCon Hollywood, on April 15, 2025, Alpay’s works, including “The Golden Dichotomy” and a second presentation of “A Giant Leap,” integrated GPU-accelerated rendering and blockchain-based systems. RenderCon’s focus on decentralized rendering and real-time technologies aligned with Alpay’s ongoing research into the intersection of data, computation and generative art. These exhibitions highlighted Alpay’s innovative use of sound and emerging digital tools to explore themes of memory, data and temporality.
