Electrical and Electronics Engineering senior student Elif Ahsen Çakmakci participated in relief efforts in the earthquake zone last week. Ahsen was a volunteer leader in the scouting branch of the Alpha Youth and Sports Club. Together with other leaders, she received search and rescue training from AFAD.
On Tuesday, February 7, Ahsen arrived in Hatay-Antakya and worked in the earthquake zone distributing supplies, setting up tents and closing roads to make way for ambulances. “For four days, we unloaded supplies from trucks and distributed them to people in tent cities and school gardens. On Friday, we picked up an elderly aunt who was returning to Ankara and set off to go back. When we left the zone there was still a lot of need. That’s why I want to go back in the coming days.”
