Asst. Prof. John O’Dwyer passed away on Tuesday May 9, 2023, after 31 years of service at Bilkent University. Dr. O’Dwyer, a member of the Faculty of Education, Department of Educational Sciences, and the Coordinator of İ.D.V. Private Bilkent Schools, served as Director of the English Language Preparatory Program from 1996–2015. On May 18, family, friends and members of the Bilkent community gathered at a memorial for Dr. O’Dwyer.
Dr. O’Dwyer’s spouse, Prof. Pınar Aydın O’Dwyer, and other family members as well as many friends, colleagues and current and former students shared memories and offered their condolences during the memorial.
The ceremony began with opening remarks by Prof. Pınar Aydın O’Dwyer, then Rector Prof. Kürşat Aydoğan and Prof. Abdullah Atalar, former rector and provost of Bilkent University, spoke about Dr. O’Dwyer. One by one, his colleagues then recounted their fond memories of
Dr. O’Dwyer and shared their heartfelt remembrance. All expressed their deep sorrow and paid tribute to him as an invaluable teacher who served Bilkent since 1992.
The remarks and messages touched on many aspects of Dr. O’Dwyer’s life and character, including his inspirational teaching, dedication, discipline, work ethic, kindness and wisdom as well as his love of art and music, sense of humor, extraordinary being, humor, helpfulness and thoughtfulness. Above all, his ever-present smile was celebrated. John O’Dwyer’s contribution to Bilkent schools and the Bilkent University will never be forgotten. He will be missed greatly, not only by his family but also by his many colleagues and former students.
