The Bilkent University Human Rights Research Studies and Application Center, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Turkey Office and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ankara, organized an essay competition on “Environmental Law, Climate Justice and Disaster Law” from June to September.
The award ceremony was held at the C-Block Auditorium, on October 3. The top three winners, selected from a robust pool of applications, were honored with certificates and prizes by Rector Kürşat Aydoğan; Ms. Nathalie Lintvelt, Deputy Ambassador to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; and Ms. Louisa Vinton, UNDP Turkey Resident Representative.
Ms. Nagehan İlemin Alan, a PhD Candidate at Galatasaray Law School, took first place with her writing on “Collective Protection Instruments in the Protection of Nature: Possibilities and Discussions on the Turkish Administrative Judicial System.” Mr. Arif Doğukan Erkin, a 3rd-year student at MEF Law School, secured second place with his essay, “Anthropocentric Thought and Climate: From the Right to the Environment to the Right of Mother Nature.” Lastly, Ms. Melike Çolakoğlu, a research assistant at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli Faculty of Law, claimed third place with her essay on “Climate Justice and Child Rights.”
This competition aimed to enhance awareness about sustainability, climate change, environmental protection and the rights of future generations while also encouraging young academics to engage in research on the topic.
