Bilkent University hosted Prof. Thors Hans Hansson of Stockholm University and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as a speaker for the 2023 İhsan Doğramacı Memorial Lecture. This year’s memorial lecture titled “Five Wonders of the Quantum World,” was held on Wednesday, November 15, at the İhsan and Ayser Doğramacı Science, Culture and Art Center.
Prof. Hansson is a distinguished scientist who made seminal contributions to Quantum Chromo Dynamics, the theory of strong force, and Chern-Simons theory. He served as a member of the Nobel Committee for Physics and was the director of Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
The lecture began with the opening remarks by Rector Prof. Kürşat Aydoğan, Prof. Tayfun Özçelik, dean of the Faculty of Science and Prof. Bilal Tanatar of the Department of Physics. The program continued with a movie screening of İhsan Doğramacı followed by a mini concert by Nil İpek Şabi, Belit Çiftçi and Elif Naz Karabulut.
In his talk Prof. Hansson explored some of the many intriguing aspects of quantum theory. It was a mixture of old results and very new ones. Some having direct consequences for the matter around us, and some more exotic, but with potential consequences for future technology. Prof. Hansson’s aim was to show that all these aspects form a beautiful braid of theoretical ideas and observable phenomena.
