The Department of Communication and Design (COMD) organized an event, Dolby Atmos Listening Sessions, which took place on November 17–18. A group of 39 artists, composers, sound designers and mix engineers were hosted for two days / four sessions. Dolby and Apple Music helped support the event.
The event took place in the newly built Dolby Suite in the COMD Media Production Studio.
The studio houses a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos immersive audio system. Atmos is a format designed for cinema that was later extended to music in 2021 as a result of Dolby and Apple’s collaboration. The biggest feature of this system (and what distinguishes it from previous surround systems, such as 5.1) is that it can also be experienced with headphones. As with other systems, there is no requirement for a certain number of speakers.
Each session started with a presentation by Dr. Ufuk Önen (COMD), Nurkut Özdemir (Dolby) and Cemal Arman (Apple Music). Then, in groups of 3–4 people, participants experienced the Dolby Atmos system and Apple Music Spatial Audio format in the studio.
