“World Zero Waste Day” aims to raise awareness for sustainability and waste management. This year, an event for World Zero Waste Day was held on Friday, March 29, at the Spring Festival Area.
The day included many events, such as artworks, talks, sports events, zero-waste quizzes and workshops as well as a Radio Bilkent broadcast. There was also a live performance of sculptor Doğan Karakılıç’s artwork with scrap musical materials. A ceremony was held for students who participated in the zero-waste logo competition in which Beyza Mira Güngen and Osman Arif Sabah shared first place.
In his opening speech, Rector Kürşat Aydoğan stated, “Sustainable development is critical to leaving a clean Türkiye and a livable world for future generations. In this context, we are the first Ankara university to receive the Ministry’s Basic Level Zero Waste Certificate. As you know, we have established many points on campus to separate waste at source. At these points, we collect waste paper and plastics, end-of-life batteries, lamps, electrical appliances and similar materials. With zero waste principles, we strive to avoid waste; reduce, reuse and recycle waste; and move towards a better world together. A cleaner and greener environment is our common wish. We hope that our March 29 Zero Waste Day will be a pioneer in this endeavor and raise social awareness.”
