What were your first impressions about Türkiye?
Upon my arrival in Türkiye, I was greeted with the sour-sweet taste of muşmula and the aroma of ripe bananas in Alanya, Antalya province.
What do you like best about Bilkent and Türkiye?
The most cherished aspect of Bilkent and Türkiye for me is the bonds I’ve made with the people here. I am immensely grateful for the people in my life whom I can call family. I deeply appreciate the friendships and guidance I’ve found at Bilkent.
What will you miss most about Bilkent/Türkiye?
What I’ll miss most about Bilkent are the late evening conversations where we delve into our lives and dreams and the all-nighters with my friends as we strive together towards our academic goals. These moments are where some of my fondest memories were created.
What’s your favorite place on campus, and why?
My sanctuary on campus lies within the SA/SB/UNAM area, where I’ve spent hours studying, connecting with friends and envisioning my future. It is most beautiful in late spring.
What’s your favorite Turkish food and why?
While Ankara tava has always been a favorite dish of mine, it’s kuşbaşılı pide with tereyağ on top that has truly won my heart with its rich and comforting flavor.
Where do you expect to see yourself 10 years from now?
I envision myself as a successful scientist delving into the intricate details of evolutionary neurobiology and neurodegenerative diseases, driven by a passion for discovery.
What’s one thing you learned from Turkish culture?
One profound lesson I’ve learned from Turkish culture is the deep respect for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Despite not being Turkish myself, I am deeply inspired by his visionary ideas and the impact they’ve had on shaping Türkiye’s identity, particularly his advocacy for education and women’s rights.
What places have you visited in Türkiye, and which one is your favorite?
I’ve had the privilege of exploring various beautiful destinations in Turkey, from the natural wonders of Pamukkale to the vibrant and picturesque cities of Konya, İzmir, İstanbul and Antalya. Among them, Alanya holds a special place in my heart. Beaches, Akdeniz and an abundance of fruit trees create an atmosphere that truly comforts me.
What’s an interesting question or comment you hear frequently at Bilkent/in Türkiye?
It is the notion of savoring our youth, yet finding ourselves engulfed in the hustle of academic pursuits.
