The Library is pleased to announce a comprehensive reorganization of Bilkent University Institutional Archive (BUIR)’s hierarchical structure, aimed at improving accessibility and usability for faculty, staff and students. This reorganization is a key step in ensuring that the vast array of Bilkent’s research outputs preserved digitally within the archive is more easily navigable and better aligned with the needs of our academic community.
Academic Contributions of the New Structure
• Departmental Focus: Previously organized by material type, the archive structure has been transformed into a faculty- and department-focused system. This change allows each faculty and department to more clearly showcase their academic identity. Now, students and academics can more easily access publications belonging to their respective faculties.
• Increased Academic Visibility: The homepage of our institutional repository system has been updated with 15 cards created specifically for faculties. This enhancement makes the publications of each faculty more visible, thereby facilitating the promotion of academic work at an institutional level. This new structure enables faculties to more effectively promote research in their respective fields, laying the groundwork for increased academic collaboration.
• Easy Access and Archiving: The new system, which transitions from faculties to material types, ensures that users can quickly find the information they are looking for. The consolidation of academic work within specific departments makes it easier for researchers to access relevant resources, thereby supporting a more efficient research process.
• Institutional Memory and Continuity: Institutional archives play a crucial role in the creation and preservation of our university’s academic memory. The DSpace system is vital for digitally preserving academic work, passing it on to future generations and ensuring the continuity of our academic heritage. The updates facilitate the management of this process more effectively and efficiently.
