Ethics and Explainability in Artificial Intelligence

On December 10–11, engineering students enrolled in “Introduction to Science Technology and Society” (GE 301) attended the lecture “Ethics and Explainability in Artificial Intelligence: An Engineering Perspective,” delivered by Duran Doğukan Kaygısız. The event was hosted as part of an ongoing collaboration with FİGES A.Ş., the Turkish distributor of MATLAB and Simulink, in an effort to integrate industry insights into academic learning. Mr. Kaygısız, an AI and Machine Learning Engineer at FİGES, provided an overview of different approaches to machine learning and emphasized the importance of interpretability and explainability. He emphasized how these attributes are essential for building trust in AI applications, particularly in fields where ethical considerations and transparency are paramount. The seminar ended with a live demonstration on object detection.

This event provided an opportunity for students to reflect critically on the ethical and social consequences of delegating decision-making processes to AI systems.
