Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM) hosted a special panel discussion highlighting the achievements, career journeys and inspiring stories of women in science as part of its International Women’s Day celebrations. Held on March 14, the event, titled “Inspiring Women in Science: Career Journeys, Experiences and Achievements,” attracted significant interest and a large audience.
The panel featured four distinguished scientists— UNAM Asst. Prof. Wonmi Ahn, Assoc. Prof. Yegan Erdem, Dr. Ayça Arslan Ergül and Dr. Sezin Galioğlu Özaltuğ—who shared insights into their scientific careers, research and personal experiences. Moderated by Aslı Semerci, a PhD student in UNAM’s Materials Science and Nanotechnology (MSN) program, the discussion covered topics such as the contributions women have made to science and society, gender representation in academia and the challenges women face in the field.
The speakers also reflected on the opportunities and obstacles they have encountered throughout their careers, offering valuable advice and inspiration to aspiring scientists. The event sparked discussions on the steps needed to increase female participation in science. One of the most engaging parts of the panel was the encouraging messages directed at young women pursuing careers in research, which reinforced the importance of visibility and support for women in the field.
