Bilkent University Human Rights Studies Application and Research Center (Bilkent HRC) organized the 3rd Essay Competition under the theme “Technological Surveillance and Human Rights.” Aiming to promote human rights awareness and support young researchers, this year’s theme addressed current debates surrounding privacy and data protection in the digital age. The winners received their awards at a ceremony held on November 12.
Starting with opening remarks by Bilkent HRC Director, Asst. Prof. A. Dicle Ergin, the event continued with a keynote lecture, “The Limits and Possibilities of Law in the Protection of Privacy,” by Assoc. Prof. Duygu Hatipoğlu Aydın from Hacettepe University Faculty of Law.
Attended by Rector Prof. Kürşat Aydoğan, Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Başak Baysal, faculty members, students and guests, the ceremony concluded with the award presentations. Yurdagül Koca Ertan received the first-place award; Hatice Fatma Budak received the second-place award as well as the Ege Okant Special Award*; and Figen Durak received the third-place award.
(*) The Ege Okant Special Award is presented in memory of Ege Okant, a 2017 graduate of Bilkent University Faculty of Law who lost her life in the 6 February 2023 earthquake.
