Organized by the Department of Architecture, a seminar titled “Disaster Urbanization: Findings from the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes” was held on February 6 at the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.
During the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Bülent Batuman, chair of the Department of Architecture, presented the preliminary findings of his ongoing research examining the relationship between urbanization policies and disaster vulnerability in Turkish cities, with a focus on the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.
The research project, titled “Urbanization Policies and Earthquake Vulnerability in Small and Mid-Size Cities: An Investigation on the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes,” analyzed five cities of different scales in the disaster-affected region: Antakya, Adıyaman, Elbistan, İslahiye and Gölbaşı. The research was supported by the TÜBİTAK 1001 Funding Program.
