For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?
This week, Emir Utku Şekercileroğlu, a fourth-year Chemistry student, has some words of wisdom for this year’s freshmen.
Q. What advice would you give freshmen about the Bilkent experience?
Do what you love because things can get hard at Bilkent. You may not be able to handle it if you do not love it. Try not to get lost in somber thoughts when those times come and know that everyone around you has wanted to quit many times before. Yet, they are still with you. Friends are important and having good friends helps a lot in overcoming difficulties.
Opportunities are almost infinite here if one looks for them. You should find your ultimate club/society. There is always one that feels like ‘home,’ so find it if you haven’t yet. Having precious friends is a bonus! Some clubs are strangely classified, and nobody knows about them. For example, I found mine in my third year (DOST). Never lose hope.
Q. What’s something students should keep in mind throughout their time at Bilkent?
Try to remind yourself to enjoy life. Many of us usually forget this. Having time for yourself is very worthy, even when your midterm is tomorrow. These times will pass, and we must live the life that we will miss in the future.
Q. Any tips or tricks to surviving life at Bilkent?
* Do not lose library books but take out as many as you can. There is always a way for more.
* Discover Ankara. For example, try different dining places. There are plenty.
* Attend seminars whenever you can, even if they are not relevant to your profession.
*Try different sports; find yours.
*Everybody is unique; always respect others’ experiences.
Q. One word about your experience at Bilkent so far?
Confusion.
