“Suddenly Last Summer,” a play performed by Sokhumi State Drama Theatre in Tbilisi and directed by the Department of Performing Arts Chair Asst. Prof. Jason Hale, will be performed at the İKSV (İstanbul Culture and Arts Foundation) Theatre Festival on October 30 and 31.
The play, premiered on October 5, was partly sponsored by the US Embassy in Georgia and will continue to play in Tbilisi this season. It is also scheduled to tour to the US at the Tennessee Williams International Theatre Festival in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
“Suddenly Last Summer,” written by Tennessee Williams, is a drama play set in the Garden District of New Orleans in the 1930s. A wealthy widow mourns the recent loss of her son, a poet. When her niece reveals the son’s true nature and the shocking cause of his death during his summer visit to Spain, the mother rages and stops at nothing to hide the story from the public to protect her son’s reputation. A quintessential Williams drama, this award-winning play has been performed on Broadway, adapted into an Oscar-winning film and revived in theatre with notable actors around the world.
