Having Fun? Don’t Worry, That’s Not Going Away Soon

BY İREM NAZ DUYMUŞ (AMER/III) & EDA EMEKOĞLU (AMER/III)

This month has had many firsts: first classes to consider in add/drop week, the first official week of classes and the first edition of Bilkent News (filled with amazing content). Yeah, all of that happened. I don’t know about you, but I think the month has been pretty optimal—we all went to parties and festivals, socialized (whether voluntarily or not), went to classes full of hope and motivation and kick-started the academic year, once again surpassing our dearest friends in the country, as Bilkent likes to be the first.

Overall, the month has been fulfilling—and consequently costly. As if that wasn’t enough, October looks like it’s going to be even more expensive. It’s set to be filled with exciting activities and colder weather. My personal goal for the month is to stay healthy and go to lots of concerts. Starting off strong, the long-awaited Tamino concert is finally happening at CerModern on October 9th. After that, many artists will perform, from Flört to Edis to Selda Bağcan. I’m confident you’ll find your own concert of the month.

But don’t think October is only about concerts—there will also be incredible theatre performances. “Of Mice and Men,” “Don Quixote” and one of our very own plays, “Timsah Ateşi,” directed by Mehmet Ergen, will be staged throughout the month. And let’s not forget: October comes right before the scary, creeping midterm season, so think of it as your time to shine before descending into a spiral of worries, anxiety and sleep deprivation. Now that I think about it, I may already be suffering from all those symptoms—but for entirely different reasons.

We all feel the societal pressure of deciding what we’re going to be, right? I mean for that eerie, spooky, scary time of the year: Hallowe’en. I have no idea what I’ll be dressing up as, but I suppose Pinterest search sessions need to start soon, alongside more worries about saving money. Honestly, Hallowe’en is one of the most expensive seasons out there—with costumes, accessories and parties…So, dear readers, I’d advise you to get those funds ready, because this month is going to be brutal. After all, this is the last exit before midterms—or at least, for me it is.

Still, maybe October isn’t as terrifying as it seems. Then again, it might just be October looking scarier through my tinted lenses—because without my glasses, I can’t see much at all.
