As part of the Science Café series, a talk titled “Living with Inflation: How to Protect Your Purchasing Power from History to Today” was delivered by Asst. Prof. Burçin Kısacıkoğlu from the Department of Economics on March 11 at the Çankaya Municipality Youth Center.
In his presentation, Dr. Kısacıkoğlu discussed the concept of inflation and its impact on everyday life. He explained that inflation refers to a sustained increase in the general level of prices, emphasizing that a price increase in a single product does not necessarily indicate inflation.
The talk also introduced how inflation is measured, focusing on indicators such as the Consumer Price Index, which is calculated based on the price of a basket of goods and services representing household consumption. Dr. Kısacıkoğlu also addressed common misunderstandings about inflation, noting that a decline in inflation does not mean prices are falling but rather that they are increasing at a slower rate.
Highlighting the importance of financial literacy, Dr. Kısacıkoğlu noted that understanding inflation is key to protecting purchasing power and making informed economic decisions. The event provided participants with an accessible overview of the topic and encouraged greater awareness of its impact on economic well-being.
