What were your first impressions about Türkiye?
By the time I moved to Türkiye, I had visited İstanbul about 10 years earlier during the summer. I remember being really impressed by how diverse the city felt. There was such a strong mix of cultures, people and lifestyles, all in one place. There was a lot to explore from the old city to the modern gardens and scenery. I found it to be very unique.
What do you like best about Bilkent and Türkiye?
One of the things I really like about Türkiye is how each city has its own unique identity. When I think about places like İstanbul, Ankara and Eskişehir, they all feel very different from each other. As for Bilkent University, I really enjoy how calm and quiet the campus is. I know some people don’t prefer that, but for me it really helps me focus and feel comfortable. And I think it’s really convenient that the campus isn’t far from the city and that transportation is available to help students go in and out of the university.
Are there any similarities between Türkiye and your home country?
Probably the food…there are a lot of similar meals and desserts. Also, both countries have rich and important historical backgrounds, which really influence their culture.
What will you miss most about Bilkent and Türkiye?
Friends probably. While it’s really nice meeting people from different backgrounds, it is also hard knowing that once everyone goes their separate ways, staying in touch will be challenging.
What’s your favorite place on campus, and why?
My dorm, probably. I get to go back there and relax after a long day of studying and lectures. It is my comfort space.
What’s your favorite Turkish food and why?
I enjoy İskender and köfte, mainly because of their rich combinations of flavors.
Where do you expect to see yourself 10 years from now?
I see myself contributing to society through my work. I hope to gain as much experience as possible from different regions of the world, learning from diverse contexts and approaches. Then I plan to use it to leave my own fingerprint later.
What’s one thing you learned from Turkish culture?
Hospitality is a huge aspect. It was very meaningful to see that sense of community here in Türkiye.
What places have you visited in Türkiye, and which one is your favorite?
I have visited İstanbul, Ankara, Bursa, Eskişehir and Fethiye. Out of these, I would say Bursa is probably my favorite. I really enjoyed its natural environment and the quiet, peaceful atmosphere.
What’s an interesting question or comment you hear frequently at Bilkent/in Türkiye?
People asking where I am from. Sometimes they also ask if I can understand Turkish when they speak.
Describe yourself in three words.
Thoughtful, driven, creative.
How is the studying experience at Bilkent?
Okay overall, but at times it can feel a bit challenging to take a break and step away from university life.
