For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?
This week, Konur Alp Yıldızkan, a fourth-year Mathematics, has some words of wisdom for this year’s freshmen.
Q. What advice would you give freshmen about the Bilkent experience?
Explore the campus and find new places. The campus is filled with lovely roads just waiting to be discovered. Also, try to meet new people. Make friends with people from other departments as well as from your own.
Q. What’s something students should keep in mind throughout their time at Bilkent?
It is possible to grow personally at Bilkent outside of the classroom. Never be afraid to visit the clubs that interest you or, if necessary, start your own club. Considering your extracurricular interests, carefully select your electives.
Q. Any tips or tricks to surviving life at Bilkent?
Learn how you can feel more at ease while learning. Your learning style might not be well-suited to the suggestions and teaching methods of the instructors. In this situation, use your spare time to work in the way that you can be most productive. Start your exam preparation at least a week in advance and go over every sample exam question you can get your hands on.
Q. One word about your experience at Bilkent so far?
Long.
