On Friday, April 18, Bilkent University hosted the seminar “AI in Education: From Stochastic Parrots to Synergistic Partners” led by Prof. Mutlu Çukurova, Professor of Learning and Artificial Intelligence at University College London.
Prof. Çukurova explored how AI can function as tools, cognitive models and collaborative agents in education. The seminar, organized by the Teaching and Learning Support Center, examined the promises and limitations of generative AI in supporting both teaching practices and student learning.
He also addressed critical concerns surrounding ethics, human agency and systemic inequalities in education. Drawing on his research in multimodal learning analytics and human-AI hybrid intelligence, Prof. Çukurova advocated for AI systems that enhance human competence, support lifelong learning and align with broader societal values.
With a background in educational AI policy and research, Prof. Çukurova has contributed to UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework, led the UCLAIT team and held editorial roles in prominent academic journals.
